Discover Cosmic Cavern – Guided Cave Tours and More

April 10th, 2021

Cosmic CavernArkansas is home to some of the best caves in the country and many are within easy reach of Eureka Springs. Cosmic Cavern is a great example, with interesting rock formations, two underground lakes, wild cave tours, and all less than 30 minutes away from 5 Ojo.

Cosmic Cavern is Arkansas’s largest privately owned show cave. The cave was discovered in 1845 but wasn’t developed as a show cave until 1927. As with virtually all Arkansas caves, Cosmic Cavern is a “living” karst cave.

Karst caves are created by natural erosion over thousands of years. Flowing water slowly eats away softer rock, like limestone, from harder, surrounding stone to leave an empty pocket. A “living” cave is one that is still forming through this process of flowing water and deposited minerals.

Cosmic Cavern is considered one of the top Show Caves in the United States and their cave tours are very popular.

Visit War Eagle Cavern on Beaver Lake

June 6th, 2020

War Eagle Cavern entranceLooking for a little adventure? War Eagle Cavern on beautiful Beaver Lake includes an underground lake, bats, trails, waterfalls, and more. Plus it’s only a half hour’s drive from 5 Ojo, our Eureka Springs bed and breakfast!

War Eagle Cavern is one of the oldest show caves in the state, and the largest in Northwest Arkansas. Its entrance is wide and dark, like some dragon’s lair in a medieval fantasy. Inside, three stories of caverns contain many unusual shapes and features, including domes, rimstone dams, and waterfalls.

That’s right, War Eagle is home to a natural, fresh water spring that flows out of the cave’s mouth, next to the entry path. Very unique!

A Visit to War Eagle Cavern

April 12th, 2013

Now that the nice weather is returning, it is time to start thinking about trips in the outdoors. One of our favorite local outdoor recreations is the War Eagle Cavern.

The cave just reopened for the 2013 season. War Eagle Cavern has a stunning natural entrance that makes you think of the kind of place where a mythical creature would keep its treasure. Located on the shores of Beaver Lake about one-half mile off Highway 12, it is about 30 minutes from our bed and breakfast in Eureka Springs.

There are no stairs or tight passages, only wide walkways that are stroller and pet friendly. There are also 60 minute guided walking tours. The daily hours are Monday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for adults, children 4-11 years are $9, under 4 are free.

As Long as You’re at War Eagle…

We recommend you stop at the War Eagle Mill. About 4 miles Southwest from the Cavern, the historical War Eagle Mill is a water-powered grist mill on the War Eagle River, where they still produce fresh wholegrain cornmeal, flours, mixes and cereals. There is a gift shop and a tasty restaurant. If you go to War Eagle Cavern then make sure you also stop here! The mill, gift shop and restaurant are open every day from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. We think heading to the Cavern after breakfast at the B&B and then getting lunch at the Bean Palace Restaurant at the War Eagle Mill is an excellent way to spend a day in the Ozarks!
