May Festival of the Arts Events

April 18th, 2013

Eureka Springs is lucky to call itself an arts community, and every year the whole month of May is dedicated to bringing art to the public. The May Festival of the Arts, or as we call it around here, the “MayFest,” includes a whole slew of art events. Here are some events taking place this year:

  • The Eureka Springs Music Sculpture Park
  • Basin Park Art Fest
  • The Sphere Community Sculpture
  • Plein Air Painters of Eureka Springs

    A "Plein Air" painting

    A “Plein Air” painting

  • Tales from the South- Eureka Stories
  • Art Panel Installations from Eureka Springs High School Art Students
  • Susan Storch Famiy Portrait Workshop
  • Eureka Springs Preservation Society Walking History Tours

See the full calendar of events on the MayFest website.

There are going to be some returning, long favorite events as well. For example, the “Taste of Art” will be taking place in restaurants around Eureka Springs. Enjoy a delicious meal and an artists’ reception at locations like DeVitos.

Every Saturday, take a stroll and soak in some art. Featuring a specific artist each Saturday of May, galleries will be open and exhibiting local and regional works. Each featured gallery will host a small meet and greet with the artist, light refreshment and hearty artistic interpretations.

If music is more your medium, the Eureka Springs Arts Council is pleased to unveil the Eureka Springs Music Park. Interactive music sculptures will be on permanent display for public enjoyment in the North Main parking lot. The musical sculpture instruments have been conceived and designed by Ranaga Farbriarz, in collaboration with several other local artists and welders.  The Music Park will have its grand opening on Saturday, May 25th at 2 p.m. The Grammy-nominated folk duo “Trout Fishing in America” will kick off the ceremony, followed by Clear Springs Music students and Ranaga himself!

And a favorite of ours is White Street Walk. This event will be on Friday, May 17th, from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. Historic White Street is just around the corner from our inn and is where many of the local artists live and work. They will welcome the public into their homes and studios to view their latest works. They will be joined by more than forty guest artists from the Eureka Springs area, who will show weaving, watercolors, jewelry, oils, pottery, stained glass and much more. A very fun art event.

Spend May at the 5 Ojo

Whether you stay one night, a weekend or all week, our bed and breakfast inn is here to provide great service, delicious breakfasts and local insight about Eureka Springs.

A Visit to War Eagle Cavern

April 12th, 2013

Now that the nice weather is returning, it is time to start thinking about trips in the outdoors. One of our favorite local outdoor recreations is the War Eagle Cavern.

The cave just reopened for the 2013 season. War Eagle Cavern has a stunning natural entrance that makes you think of the kind of place where a mythical creature would keep its treasure. Located on the shores of Beaver Lake about one-half mile off Highway 12, it is about 30 minutes from our bed and breakfast in Eureka Springs.

There are no stairs or tight passages, only wide walkways that are stroller and pet friendly. There are also 60 minute guided walking tours. The daily hours are Monday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for adults, children 4-11 years are $9, under 4 are free.

As Long as You’re at War Eagle…

We recommend you stop at the War Eagle Mill. About 4 miles Southwest from the Cavern, the historical War Eagle Mill is a water-powered grist mill on the War Eagle River, where they still produce fresh wholegrain cornmeal, flours, mixes and cereals. There is a gift shop and a tasty restaurant. If you go to War Eagle Cavern then make sure you also stop here! The mill, gift shop and restaurant are open every day from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. We think heading to the Cavern after breakfast at the B&B and then getting lunch at the Bean Palace Restaurant at the War Eagle Mill is an excellent way to spend a day in the Ozarks!

Traveling to Eureka Springs Soon?

We hope the next time you are in Eureka Springs, you will come and stay with us at the 5 Ojo Bed and Breakfast Inn. Along with comfortable and luxuriant accommodations, we promise superior service with a personal touch!

Springtime at Turpentine Wildlife Refuge

March 8th, 2013

Turpentine Wildlife Refuge is a home for large exotic cats. It is a fun, exciting place with a big heart! If you are an animal lover, make sure you add Turpentine Wildlife Refuge to your must-see list while visiting the Eureka Springs area. Turpentine is only seven miles outside of town, maybe a 10 minute drive. They have some magnificent animals there.

The Wildlife Refuge is open every day except Christmas. An an all-day pass is $15.00 for adults, $10.00 for Veterans, Senior Citizens and Children (ages 3-12), with children under three admitted free. Lions, tigers, cougars, even ligers, are in the main compound area where you can get as close as five feet away from these magnificent creatures. Each animal has its story and personal history described on a plaque on the front of its cage for a self-guided tour. Take as long as you want!

We like to tour when it’s getting warmer out and watch one of the bears playing in a large tub of water with one of his “toys”. He splashes, rolls and climbs in and out of the tub having a great time. We almost feel like he is performing for the crowds.

The self-guided area is open from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. in the summer months. Guided tours run every hour on the hour from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. with feeding time at 4 p.m. in the winter months and 5 p.m. in the summer months. Learn more about the tours offered at the Refuge on their website.

Eureka Springs Kite Festival

eureka-springs-kite-festivalTurpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge will host the 23rd annual Kite Festival celebration March 23. Bring your own kite or buy one at the refuge. The celebration includes vendors, contests and activities for the whole family. A performance by local band The Skillet Lickers takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free for kite flying; regular admission prices apply to tour refuge wildlife on display.

KaleidoKites’ experts will assist children in kite making and flying techniques. Donations to the refuge requested for kite making assistance – please, be generous! KaleidoKites will donate a Japanese “Rokkaku” fighting kite and a tiger kite for an on-site raffle, proceeds benefiting Turpentine Creek.

“Making and flying kites is a ‘green’ sport’ families can share. It’s wind-fueled and gets kids away from sedentary activities like TV viewing and video games,” said Steve Rogers, KaleidoKites co-owner. “It’s a great photo-opportunity with world-class kites worth over a thousand dollars flown during the event. These kites are works of art, which is only fitting for an artist’s community like Eureka Springs,” added Rogers.

The event is one of the refuge’s most popular events each year and is also an important fundraiser. Proceeds finance the rescue and ongoing care for over 120 large cats and other wildlife that make the sanctuary a their life-long home.

We got married in the parlor of 5 Ojo and stayed in the Wedgwood room on our wedding night and stayed in the same room this trip. Richard & Jan were very pleasant and made us feel right at home. The room was beautiful and everything was very clean. Breakfast was delicious with a variety of choices. It gave us a chance to meet the other guests as well. Loved having a coffee maker in the room along with a variety of coffees plus snacks, pop & water. Richard & Jan were also very helpful in suggesting places to eat and visit while we were there. Will definitely stay there again. Can’t wait.”

Take a Eureka Springs Vacation this Winter

January 9th, 2013

Many people wait for summer to plan a weekend getaway or staycation in their area. But the doldrums of long winter months make this time of year perfect for a couple of nights out of the ordinary.

Here are our suggestions for a great Eureka Springs two-day vacation!

Fresh Flowers in your Room: Add something extra special to the room so upon your arrival you are greeted by bright, fragrant flowers. Set the stage for a luxurious stay!

Delicious & Romantic Dinners: If you’re local, great! You don’t have to drive far to get to the Inn. Otherwise, we have great suggestions for dinner locations that serve dinner late. Whether you enjoy ethnic food, something more traditional, or upscale, we would love to help you select the right spot!

Emilio’s is a favorite place for Italian!

Stay in a Jacuzzi Room: After dinner, relax and soak in a Jacuzzi tub in one of our romantic rooms. Share the tub, scrub each others backs and let the winter wash off you! We still have two Jacuzzi tub rooms available for Valentine’s Day.

Take a Carriage Ride: Enjoy the relaxing pace that life moved at until the invention of the automobile. There are few things more romantic than cuddling in the back of carriage while listening to the methodical ‘clip clop’ of horse hoofs on pavement.

Shop for Antiques and Visit Galleries: Downtown Eureka Springs is full of lively shopping and browsing. Nearby antique shops include Crystal Gardens Antiques, The Old Sale Barn and Inspiration Point Antiques. Local galleries near the Inn include 83 Spring Street Gallery, Quicksilver (good place for jewelry) and Fusion Squared Gallery. In fact, there are close to a dozen galleries on nearby Spring Street! Stroll the streets, enjoy a hot coffee and a tasty lunch at your pace.

We hope to see you in Eureka Springs soon!

Eureka Springs Holiday Getaways

Don’t those ooey-gooey cookies look delicious?

“Take a quaint Victorian Town nestled in the Ozark Mountains of northwestern Arkansas. Add an association of bed-and-breakfast owners who love to decorate their inns for the Christmas season. Mix in a good measure of curiosity from out-of-town guests and local people alike. And garnish with an array of holiday treats and recipes to share.”

Nine Eureka Springs Inns will be participating. Tickets are $20 and include entry into a raffle for a $100 Gift Certificate!

This is a self-guided tour with maps of participating B&Bs included, so you can visit the inns at your leisure. All of the bed and breakfasts are on or close to one of the Eureka Springs trolley routes.
